Polaris has unveiled the 2022 RZR Pro R, and it’s officially the most powerful production side-by-side on sale. The big news is the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine borrowed from the company’s Slingshot three-wheeler. The company calls the powerplant the ProStar Fury, and in this application, it puts out 225 hp. Wisely, engineers fitted the new Pro R with three throttle settings: Sport, Rock, and Race. No matter which you choose, all that grunt runs through a traditional CVT, though the Pro R gets a beefier belt and clutches than previous RZR models.

Polaris didn’t just shove a boatload of power into the old chassis, either. The frame is all new. The one-piece design includes an integrated, fully welded roll cage, and that’s not the only bit to receive some extra metal. The A-arms are fully boxed for strength, and the driveshafts, steering knuckles, and hubs are all more stout than before.

New Dynamix DV Suspension

As awesome as the power is, the RZR Pro R has another impressive trick up its fenders. The model comes with an all-new Dynamix DV suspension, which Polaris says is the “first and only” independent compression and rebound system, essentially allowing the driver to dial in the exact shock setting required for any type of terrain. Up to now, systems like Fox Live Valve have only offered adjustable compression. Dynamix DV has four suspension and steering settings, and the system takes input from various sensors 200 times per second and adjusts the Walker Evans 2.5 (front) and 3.0 (rear) Velocity needle shocks accordingly.

Standard 32-inch Tires

That suspension should work to keep the massive 32-inch Maxxis Rampage Fury tires on the ground. The 2022 RZR Pro R wears five-lug 15 x 7 cast aluminum wheels and 10-inch tires on all four corners. That means you’ll only need to carry one spare on the trail, which is always a win in our book. Those tires are partly what give the machine its wide 74-inch stance.

Serious Power, Serious Brakes

There are potent brakes hiding behind the new, larger wheels. Polaris graced the Pro R with aluminum-hat discs all the way around. That’s nothing new, but the three-piston calipers up front certainly are. The back discs get two-piston calipers, though we still don’t get an actual parking brake. The Pro R uses a park-in-transmission system.

Fully Adjustable Seats

The cabin should be Polaris’ most comfortable yet, thanks in part to a tilt steering wheel and four-way-adjustable bucket seats. The thrones slide fore and aft and tilt for the first time, and befitting a vehicle with this much power, four-point harnesses are standard.

How Much?

The 2022 Polaris RZR Pro R starts at $31,999. The Pro R 4 price is $35,999. Both can be had in Sport, Premium, and Ultimate trims, and you can expect the first examples to show up in dealers early next year.
