Get ’Em Started While They’re Young!

With parental supervision and a few safety controls, 6 years of age is prime for teaching kids to ride an ATV.

With parental supervision and a few safety controls, 6 years of age is prime for teaching kids to ride an ATV. (Kawasaki/)

It’s been said that small youth-model ATVs for ages 6 and up are all the same. They’re all designed for small riders, they come with small air-cooled engines, and automatic CVT transmissions are standard with final chain drive. But that’s really where the similarities stop and the differences begin. Some youth models are more ideal for track use with smaller tires and lower ground clearance while others have taller tires to more easily clear trail obstacles. Some have drum brakes and some have hydraulic disc brakes or a combination of both. Most are carbureted but some have EFI, and engine sizes can vary from 50cc to 70cc. Finally, and more importantly, they all have some form of parental controls—more or less.

With that in mind, we’ve assembled a comparison of the top six youth-model ATVs for riders 6 years of age and older. We hope that this will better help parents to choose the right ATV for the child who is just beginning their adventure with their first ATV.

2022 Can-Am DS 70.

2022 Can-Am DS 70. (Can-Am/)

The Can-Am DS 70 has one of the larger engines in this comparison and is the only model with reverse. Riders can select forward, neutral, or reverse with an easy-to-use inline shifter. This model has the most rear suspension travel at more than 6 inches, but it also has the tallest seat height. The DS 70 is the widest ATV in this comparison, just besting the Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI, and is one of the heavier youth models listed here. The DS 70 has an electric starter with a backup kickstarter. Safety features consist of an adjustable throttle/speed limiter and daytime running lights to increase vehicle visibility.

2022 Kawasaki KFX50.

2022 Kawasaki KFX50. (Kevan Ray/)

The Kawasaki KFX50 has one of the smaller engines in our comparison, but it will still kick up a lot of dirt. This model has smaller 16-inch tires with less suspension travel and ground clearance, making it ideal for mini motocross track use. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a good trail performer. This is one of the wider models in this comparison with shocks that are preload adjustable for better cornering stability. An automatic CVT transmission has a single speed and that’s forward. Warm up the engine, give it a little gas, and you’re moving. This model mixes dual drum brakes up front with a single hydraulic disc brake at the rear. Safety features include an adjustable throttle/speed limiter and an engine shut-off switch with extended lanyard attached to the rear grab bar so parents can follow behind and pull the engine stop if their child loses control.

2022 Kayo Fox 70.

2022 Kayo Fox 70. (Kayo/)

The Kayo Fox 70 is the least expensive model in this comparison. It’s also the lightest, has front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, an adjustable rear shock and a 70cc engine. It also has headlights, a rear taillight and brake light, and 4.5 inches of ground clearance. The Kayo Fox 70 is one of the narrower machines in this comparison at 31.4 inches, and it’s one of the shortest in length, but it also has a lower seat height than most. Unfortunately, Kayo doesn’t list suspension travel numbers. Safety features include an adjustable throttle/speed limiter and a handlebar-mounted engine shut-off switch with a tether that should be attached to the rider.

2022 Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI.

2022 Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI. (Polaris/)

As the name implies, the Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI is the only ATV in this comparison with electronic fuel injection, making it more responsive and less susceptible to power loss in cold weather and high altitude. EFI fuels a 70cc engine with a single-speed automatic CVT transmission. It’s the most expensive ATV on this list, just topping the Can-Am DS 70 by $50, but we think the cost is more than justified with EFI. This model includes single lever front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, LED headlights, and a battery charging port. This is also the only model with a rear rack that can handle up to 25 pounds of strapped cargo. The Outlaw 70 EFI has the most safety and parental controls with an adjustable throttle/speed limiter (1–15 mph), horn, tethered engine shut-off switch, a training DVD, and a safety flag, and it’s the only model that includes a youth-sized helmet.

2022 Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI Specs

Engine:Air-cooled, four-stroke EFI 70cc single-cylinder
Transmission:1-speed automatic CVT
Suspension F/R:Single A-arm; 4.0 in. travel / swingarm; 4.0 in. travel

2022 Suzuki QuadSport Z50.

2022 Suzuki QuadSport Z50. (Suzuki/)

Suzuki’s QuadSport Z50 is unique with a front swing-axle design with dual shock absorbers. The 49cc four-stroke engine is mated to an automatic single-speed CVT transmission. The Suzuki is the narrowest youth model in this comparison, has the lowest seat height at just over 21 inches, and is one of the lightest, making it suitable for the smallest of riders. Like every model here, electric start is standard but theQuadSport Z50 also comes with a backup recoil starter. Safety features include an adjustable throttle/speed limiter and a rear-mounted engine shut-off switch with remote lanyard so parents can follow behind and retain control. Suzuki’s 12-month limited warranty is double that of most youth-model ATVs.

2022 Suzuki QuadSport Z50 Specs

Engine:Air-cooled, four-stroke carbureted 49cc single-cylinder

2022 Yamaha YFZ50.

2022 Yamaha YFZ50. (Yamaha/)

The Yamaha YFZ50 is another motocross-inspired model that received its styling from the MX-ready YFZ450R. It has a low seat height and overall light weight, making it ideal for small riders. The 49cc engine has plenty of pep once warmed up. The automatic CVT transmission keeps kids focused on what’s ahead of them rather than what gear they are in. Wide footwells allow plenty of room for small boots while protecting legs from rocks and debris. Ergonomics are excellent on the Yamaha, encouraging little ones to experience balance by leaning through corners and adjusting weight over hills. The YFZ is electric start without backup manual starting. Safety features include adjustable throttle/speed limiter and a remote tethered engine shut-off switch to keep mom and dad in control.

2022 Yamaha YFZ50 Specs

Engine:SOHC, air-cooled, four-stroke carbureted 49cc single-cylinder
