Mini-me Grizzly styling, low price, ease of use and maintenance
Carbureted, one color option
The Grizzly 90 is great for kids who want their ATV to emulate their parents’ own Grizzly, but don’t expect anything from it on the utility front.
The 2022 Yamaha Grizzly 90 is the utility-looking counterpart to the mechanically identical Raptor 90. Although the little Grizz can’t tow or haul much, it’s sure to excite young riders who want to pretend to be riding the same machine as their parents. The Grizzly 90 is relatively low on features, but it’s still a decent machine that requires minimal maintenance and is a safe option for beginners.
Updates for 2022
There are no updates to the Grizzly 90 for 2022.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
2022 Yamaha Grizzly 90 MSRP: $3,199
There is but one Grizzly 90 trim available for 2022, and the only color is Armor Gray.
Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Grizzly 90′s name directly reflects its engine size with a 90cc engine nestled beneath the bodywork. It’s an air-cooled SOHC unit that is still carbureted rather than fuel injected, but that keeps costs down on a machine that kids will outgrow with time.
The Grizzly 90′s transmission is a CVT with forward, neutral, and reverse gears. The Grizzly 90 is rear-wheel drive only and uses an O-ring-style chain drive to get the power to the rear wheels.
Nobody expects the Grizzly 90 to be a handling master, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a ton of fun for the kids who ride them. These are plucky little machines, and with a relatively low center of gravity combined with the short wheelbase and narrow width, they’re very nimble. Given that the Grizzly 90 is almost mechanically identical to the Raptor 90, it’s no surprise that the Raptor’s slightly lower weight helps it handle better than the baby Grizz.
The 19-inch front tires give the Grizzly a little more ground clearance than the Raptor 90. A single A-arm and shock front suspension provides 5 inches of wheel travel up front. The rear suspension is a swingarm design with a single preload-adjustable shock that allows 5.7 inches of wheel travel. The Grizzly 90 rear suspension is not fully independent like the big Grizzly 700, but it prevents excessive roll in the corners and is easier to maintain.
The Grizzly 90 uses drum brakes to slow the machine. The front gets a drum at each wheel, and the rear has a single drum. For a machine of this size and weight, drum brakes are adequate.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
Being that this is a machine designed for the youth market, the Grizzly 90′s ergonomics are fully focused on providing a safe operating position for those who are probably riding their first ATV. Kids will love the good visibility and how comfortable the machine feels thanks to well-placed handlebars and a seat designed for comfort over sportiness.
The Grizzly 90 has racks on the front and rear of the machine but Yamaha does not provide a rating for how much they can hold. That said, the rear should easily handle a cooler or small gear bag for a day on the trail.
Even though it looks like it should be, the Grizzly 90 is not rated for towing.
There are no real electronic features on the Grizzly 90 aside from standard electric start. Dash-mounted indicators show when the Grizzly 90 is in reverse or neutral. The Grizzly 90 is equipped with halogen headlights.
