Ups

Excellent comfort and ergonomics, strong power from the twin-cylinder ProStar engine, a ton of fun on the trail

Downs

No power steering available, only one color and trim option for 2022

Verdict

The 2022 Polaris Scrambler 850 is a four-wheel-drive ATV that can keep up with sport quads on the trail and tackle tough terrain like a true 4×4. There is only one trim for the 2022 model year and it does not offer power steering or the Fox suspension that previously was available.

Overview

The 2022 Polaris Scrambler 850 is a fun sport ATV that shares a lot with its Sportsman 850 sibling. The ProStar twin-cylinder engine is a good powerplant and riders will enjoy the Scrambler 850′s mix of comfort and performance.

Updates for 2022

The 2022 Sportsman 850 is unchanged from 2021.

Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Like the Sportsman 850, all Scrambler 850s use a 78 hp ProStar twin-cylinder four-stroke engine that features electronic fuel injection. The engine pulls hard to its top speed and provides snappy throttle response down low, making it a blast on a tight trail. The One Touch On-Demand AWD/2WD system makes more sense here than it does in the Sportsman, and allows riders to continue riding hard without worrying about when to lock the front differential as the machine takes care of that on its own. The Scrambler 850 uses a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with shafts driving the front and rear axles. There are high, low, neutral, and reverse gears.

Handling

Although the 2022 Scrambler does not feature the Fox suspension once present in higher-trim Scramblers, this is still a surprisingly nimble and enjoyable machine. Credit goes to Polaris’ suspension which allows the Scrambler 850 to corner well despite the machine’s substantial heft. Dual A-arms are present in the front with 9 inches of travel, and out back the Scrambler uses dual A-arms that also feature rolled IRS, helping to net 10.3 inches of travel. The Scrambler is a blast on any trail, and though not a true sport ATV, it handles very well for one with four-wheel drive.

Brakes

All Scrambler 850s use a single lever on the right side of the handlebars to operate three hydraulic discs. Riders can also use a foot brake for the rear hydraulic discs. Park is offered as a gear in the transmission, and a lockable hand brake is present as well.

Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility

The Scrambler 850 is a wonderful place to be. The engine’s longitudinal layout allows for a narrow seat. All of the Scrambler’s controls are easy to use and reach.

Payload/Towing

Utility isn’t the Scrambler’s purpose, but it fares fine given the limitations of the small rear rack and lack of a front rack. Realistically, these serve as mounting points only for a cooler or other light carry-along: The front “rack” is rated for 25 pounds and the rear for 50 pounds. Like the Sportsman 850, the Scrambler 850 can tow 1,500 pounds.

Electronics

The base Scrambler 850 comes with: all-digital gauge, speedometer, odometer, tachometer, two tripmeters, hourmeter, gear indicator, fuel gauge, AWD indicator, voltmeter, coolant temperature, high-temp light, clock, and DC outlet. Present are 50-watt high/low beam headlights.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Scrambler 850 carries Polaris’ standard six-month warranty.
