We’ve gotten our hands on a 2022 Polaris General XP 1000 Trailhead Edition, and we’ll be using the machine to explore new trails over the next few months. As you might recall, the Trailhead is a limited-edition version of the venerable General XP 1000 aimed squarely at the adventure crowd. The rig comes decked out with everything you’d possibly want to throw at a machine for exploring new terrain, including the always-excellent Polaris Ride Command, a stout 4,500-pound winch with synthetic rope and auto stop, auxiliary lighting, and more. And while its $26,699 MSRP is a tough pill to swallow, you couldn’t upfit a base General for less. If far-flung riding is your thing, the Trailhead just might be your machine.

That’s partly thanks to the vehicle’s excellent storage. The General is already a winner in that department thanks to its cavernous center console and generous glove box, but the Trailhead adds to that formula with its clever MOLLE racks. The system attaches to the dump bed with four cam locks, which means removing it for work duty requires no tools. But we don’t see any reason to take the thing off, as it nearly doubles the bed storage, giving you a place to cinch down a cooler, a spare, and whatever else your day demands.

If that day stretches past sunset, the Trailhead has you covered with standard LED headlights and an 11-inch Pro Armor light bar. That kind of kit is nice to have, especially as we move toward shorter winter days. That pretty much sums up the Trailhead: Nothing on this machine is necessary for getting out and riding, but together, the kit makes for a much more pleasant experience. That trend continues inside, where comfortable, stylish seats and an excellent four-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system wait.

All of this is wrapped in a gorgeous metallic blue and orange livery, complete with 3D topographic overlays. It’s a handsome machine.

Power comes from a familiar engine; the same 999cc fuel-injected dual-overhead cam twin that powers both the Ranger XP 1000 and the General XP 1000. Its 100 hp is more than enough to get the Trailhead up a mountain, and the automatic PVT gearbox does an excellent job of putting power down. We also like the fact that unlike the Yamaha RMAX, the General has turf mode, unlocking the rear differential for tight turns.

So far, the only issue we see is in the tire department. We love the standard 30-inch Pro Armor Crawler tires, but would prefer to see symmetric tread designs. The Trailhead uses Crawler XGF tires up front and XGs in the rear, and while that’s not a performance problem, it does make choosing a spare awkward. Still, that’s a small complaint, and we love that Polaris has shown both the General and the adventure crowd some love with the Trailhead.
