Ups
Affordable, CVTech clutching, 4WD with lockable front differential, fully independent suspension, high-contrast digital display
Downs
Minimal towing capacity, no camouflage trim package, light-duty rack capacity, heavy for a 400cc class machine
Verdict
The competition better take notice. CFMoto has stepped up its game with some handsome-looking ATVs that come with features that other 400cc-class ATVs don’t have, like a locking front differential, independent front and rear suspension, and almost 10 inches of ground clearance. CFMoto added all of this for a whole lot less coin.
Overview
The 2022 CFMoto CForce 400 looks and feels different from last year, and that’s because it’s all new. With a sticker price well under $5,000, we’d expect a few corners to be cut, but the new CForce 400 comes with a lockable front differential for true 4WD performance, arched A-arms that enhance ground clearance, and a high-contrast LCD dash display.
Updates for 2022
The 2022 CForce 400 has been completely redesigned. Suspension travel has increased by 25 percent and the turning radius is much shorter. Front A-arms are arched for increased ground clearance. The left-hand brake lever provides measured braking to all four wheels.
The body has been redesigned with a more simplistic and modern look. Dual tail/brake lights replaced the single brake/taillight design from 2021. Engine side panels help deflect heat away from the rider. A new hood panel provides easier access to maintenance areas, and a front bumper is now standard. The new seat design is wide and plush, the new rear cargo box below the taillights is deep and spacious, and the dash display has been upgraded to a high-contrast screen. CFMoto also has a wide variety of new accessories available for this model with more on the way.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
2022 CFMoto CForce 400 MSRP $4,799
There’s only one trim for this model, and it can be had in Blue, Green, or Pearl White.
Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The CForce 400 is fitted with a single-cylinder liquid-cooled 400cc engine fed by a Bosch EFI throttle body that produces 31 hp and 24 pound-feet of torque. The transmission uses proven CVTech clutching with high and low range gearing. The CForce 400 has 2WD, 4WD, and fully locked 4WD, which are selectable with an updated switch on the handlebars. Engine-braking is also standard, making downhill descents more manageable. A 4.4-gallon fuel tank is plenty big for this displacement.
Handling
Dual arched A-arms provide independent suspension at all four wheels, helping to provide almost 10 inches of ground clearance. CFMoto claims suspension travel has increased 25 percent from 2021. The shocks are preload adjustable. The CForce 400 does not include power steering. You’ll have to step up to the CForce 500 if you can’t do without power steering.
Brakes
The CForce 400 uses hydraulic disc brakes at all four wheels. A left-hand brake lever provides measured braking to all four wheels, and a foot brake stops the rear wheels.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
The seat has been redesigned with more width and plush comfort. The rear rack wraps around the seat so that it does not come in contact with the rider. All controls are within easy grasp including the gear shifter, which can be locked in park for security when you’re away from the ATV. Personal items can be stored in a sealed pocket at the rear of the ATV. There are no drink holders. Footwells are spacious for large boots with serrated boot grips molded into the plastic floor.
Payload/Towing
The steel racks can handle a combined cargo load of 225 pounds with multiple anchor points for tie-downs. Towing capacity is low at 620 pounds, but the CForce 400 includes a standard 2-inch receiver hitch.
Electronics
A high-contrast digital dash display is new for 2022 and provides a speedometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature, odometer, clock, and more. “High-intensity headlights” are new for 2022 along with new dual taillights and brake lights. Two power ports are located on the left front fender for accessories.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
