Excellent torque from the 75 hp Rotax V-twin engine. Narrow 60-inch stance fits down most trails. Entry-level price can be appealing. A low gross weight makes towing simple. Variable engine tuning modes that are easily adjustable from the cockpit.


Visco-Lok front differential performance lacking. Halogen headlights are dated and dull. Basic suspension components can leave a bit to be desired. No roof or rearview mirror included as standard. Power steering is not included.


The Maverick Sport base trim has been, and continues to be, a great entry-level machine. What it lacks in overall features, it makes up with the ability to hit the trail on a budget. We don’t expect this trim level to live on for much longer with its manual steering setup.


The 2022 Can-Am Maverick Sport side-by-side continues to sit at the budget end of the Maverick lineup. It frames the Maverick Sport model with a base no-frills trim level that’s both easy on the wallet and the eyes. While buyers may not be purchasing cutting-edge technology, the foundation is still very much Maverick with the Rotax 976cc V-twin engine, quick-responding CVT transmission, and Torsional Trailing A-arm (TTA) rear suspension geometry.

Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A 976cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine, pumping out 75 hp, is mated to a CVT with extra-low, high, neutral, reverse, and park gears.


The Maverick Sport base-trim suspension is void of any flashy names, adjustability, or power-assisted steering. Showa 2.0 shocks tame single-rate coils on all four corners. An independent front double A-arm setup, with a sway bar, handles the steering end of the machine. Torsional Trailing A-arm geometry hangs out back, also with a second sway bar.

Flat, hard-packed surfaces are where the Maverick Sport shines. When the going gets tough, rocky, or technical, the Maverick Sport’s limited suspension performance shines through with a less compliant ride.


Four 220mm disc brakes are wrapped with hydraulic twin-piston calipers at each corner of the machine for reliable and smooth stopping power.

Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility

Lightly padded, highly bolstered bucket seats are used for both driver and passenger sides giving a decent view of the trail ahead. An adjustable tilt steering wheel gives some minor ergonomic adjustment to the driver. One area where Can-Am didn’t skimp was the full plastic half doors that help keep the elements at bay.

A generous glove box, utilitarian dashboard layout, and rear cargo area all coexist to provide decent storage room and an easy-to-operate machine.


The small rear cargo area is rated for 300 pounds of gear. The standard 2-inch hitch receiver is rated for 1,500 pounds of gross trailer weight.


A simple 4.5-inch-wide digital display sits in front of the driver’s bucket seat, acting as the only active onboard gauge. Speedometer, tachometer, odometer, tripmeters and hourmeters, fuel, gear position, engine mode, seatbelt, and four-by-four indicator, front and rear diff-lock indicators, diagnostics, clock, battery voltage, and engine temperature fill the tiny screen, depending on how it is configured.
