Ups
Sporty styling, sensible weight, low price of entry
Downs
Carbureted, and where’s the adult-sized DS 450?
Verdict
The DS 250 is a machine that’s certain to excite younger riders, though it’s likely to be a bit small and down on power for some of the over-14 crowd after a short time behind the handlebars.
Overview
The DS 250 is geared toward riders who’ve graduated from youth ATVs. It bears the styling of the long-departed full-size DS models, and should still provide thrills for anyone who rides it.
Updates for 2022
There are no updates to the DS 250 for 2022.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
2022 Can-Am DS 250 MSRP: $4,399
The DS 250 only comes in one configuration: red and black.
Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The DS 250 uses a carbureted liquid-cooled 249cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine. Can-Am doesn’t provide horsepower or torque figures.
The DS 250′s transmission is a CVT with forward, neutral, and reverse gears. It sends power solely to the back tires via shaft drive.
Handling
The DS 250 is relatively light on its feet with approachable limits. The suspension setup mimics that of bigger sport ATVs, but don’t be mistaken: This is still an entry-level machine.
Brakes
Braking on the DS 250 wears two hydraulic discs up front and a single disc in the rear.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
This segment has to cater to a wide variety of users, and as such, the DS 250 is a decent one-size-fits-all ATV, but as is the case with every machine in its class, larger riders will want for more legroom and wish the handlebars were higher.
The DS 250 is a sport ATV, so utility is not its forte. It does not have cargo racks and is not intended to be used for work duty.
Payload/Towing
The DS 250′s payload rating is not listed by Can-Am and the brand does not rate it for towing use.
Electronics
Reflecting its low entry price and the fact that it’s a sport ATV getting on in years, the DS 250 doesn’t have much in the way of electronics to show for itself. There’s a neutral light, reverse light, and oil/temperature light. Two headlamps put out 35W each, and the back end has a taillight and brake light.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Can-Am’s six-month BRP limited warranty is standard, with extended plans available for purchase.
