Verdict

The Defender Pro lineup is for the UTV owner who needs extra bed cargo capacity for doing work around the farm, or hauling large kills back through the woods, but doesn’t necessarily need to handle a lot of weight. They’re a favorite for commercial applications as well due to the extended frame to mount specialized equipment.

Overview

The Can-Am Defender Pro platform uses the HD10 powerplant and bolts it to a two-seater cab with extended cargo bed. It’s Can-Am’s answer to needing a long bed pickup truck that can squirm between trees and gates without pause. Available in a variety of trim packages with various starting price points, there’s a Defender Pro for almost every job.

We’d generally recommend the Defender Pro XT to grab the power tilting bed and front 4,500-pound winch options. If you live in extreme weather climates, look long and hard at the Pro Limited with it’s sealed and air-conditioned cab.

Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A standard Can-Am Defender Rotax V-twin 976cc engine powers each of the Pro trim UTVs. Every trim gets the same engine rated for 82 hp and 69 pound-feet of torque.

The Pro-Torq CVT transmission offers high-airflow ventilation and electronic drive belt protection across all gears. Two forward gears, one reverse gear, neutral, and park are standard on every Defender Pro trim level. Drive modes allow for single-wheel turf mode, rear locked-axle two-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive with Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential.

While the Defender has enough grunt to get nearly any job accomplished, it’s not geared toward drag racing or dune riding. You’ll want to look at the Can-Am Commander or X3 lineup for that type of vehicle.

Suspension, Handling

The Defender Pro’s suspension is brandless but does a great job of providing adequate damping for such a large machine. While gentle trail rides won’t beat you to death, it excels at being a pack mule. Stiffly sprung rear suspension is engineered to provide the correct ride at full payload. An empty utility-class rig may tend to hop around a little bit when the going gets tough, but not so for the Defender.

All Defender Pro trims share the same wheels and tires. Four 14-inch cast aluminum wheels sit at each corner. Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires wrap each wheel. The front axle uses 28 x 9 inch tires while the rear axle goes wider with 28 x 11 inch tires to help stabilize large loads.

Brakes

Every Defender Pro wears 220mm disc brakes on all four corners. Twin-piston calipers wrap each disc to provide ample stopping power while unloaded or loaded. Electronic hill descent control and hill-hold technology also provide braking assistance via onboard technology.

Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility

Handling characteristics lean toward the utilitarian end of the spectrum with a bench seat and conventional lap belts. The driver’s position is upright and almost box-truck like. Everything is geared as to making entry and exit as seamless as possible for workers trying to accomplish tasks.

The DPS trim goes full spartan with true flat bench pads and a simple interior. A flip-up passenger seat offers extra storage. Stepping up to the XT, Lone Star, or Limited trim packages adds bolstering to the bench seats for a more comfortable feel. Special trim work adorns the bolstered seats depending on which trim package you purchase.

All Defender Pro trims offer adjustable tilt steering wheels but you’ll have to opt for the XT trim or higher to get an adjustable driver-side bench seat.

The Limited trim comes standard with a fully enclosed cabin that uses true heat and air conditioning to keep you comfortable in all four seasons. Glass windows offer better insulation from temperatures and sound, and allow for a front windshield wiper kit. Both side windows are operated via a rocker switch mounted to the fully sealed door.

Payload/Towing

Rear cargo box capacity is rated at 1,000 pounds for all Defender Pro models sold outside the state of California. Inside that state you’ll get only 600 pounds of rated capacity.

Towing capacity is a modest 2,500 pounds across all trim levels of the Defender Pro. Each comes with a standard 2-inch hitch receiver.

Payload capacity varies greatly depending on how you option your Defender Pro. While the Limited allows for 1,360 pounds, the DPS and XT jump to 1,700 pounds. Remember that rating includes you and your helper, not just the cargo that’s strapped onboard.

Electronics

The DPS and XT trims use the smaller 4.5-inch digital display. Stepping up to the Lone Star or Limited means you’ll get the larger 7.6-inch digital display with a keypad. They both offer the following vehicle information: speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trips and hourmeters, fuel, gear position, Eco and work modes, seatbelt and 4×4 indicator, front and rear diff-lock indicators, diagnostics, clock, battery voltage, and engine temperature.

The vehicle’s magneto is rated for 650W output and is paired with an onboard 12-volt battery. A set of 12-volt (10-amp) outlets and two lighted USB ports sit inside the cab to help power mobile devices if you don’t opt for the base DPS trim. DPS goes without the USB ports.

Four halogen reflector headlights pair with rear LED taillights to provide a total of 140 watts of output.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

All Can-Am Defender models offer a one-year BRP limited warranty. Extended coverage options are typically available at time of purchase.
